Pembroke Place is conceived as a refined suburban retreat, an architectural response that draws deeply from the leafy character and quiet prestige of Surrey Hills.
Designed by Ewert Leaf across both architecture and interiors, the project comprises two expansive residences, each carefully considered to balance presence with restraint, and openness with privacy. Subtle cues from mid-century modern design inform the project’s language, expressed through clarity of form, an emphasis on horizontality and light, and a seamless connection between indoors and out.
At the street, a composition of modern gabled forms establishes a familiar yet distinctly contemporary silhouette. This is softened and enriched by a tactile vertical brick screen, which mediates light, outlook and privacy with a sense of rhythm and depth. The facade is both protective and permeable, allowing filtered sunlight to animate the interior while maintaining a calm, private address.
Inside, the homes unfold with a measured clarity. A sculptural staircase, positioned beneath a generous skylight, becomes the spatial and emotional centrepiece, drawing natural light deep into the plan and casting a shifting interplay of light and shadow that evolves throughout the day and across seasons. This quiet choreography establishes an immediate sense of stillness and retreat.
Each residence is generous in scale, exceeding 42 squares, and is designed to support a seamless mode of contemporary living. Private lifts, triple garages and fluid connections to landscaped outdoor areas with integrated pool settings reinforce a sense of ease and permanence. The transition between inside and out is carefully resolved, allowing living spaces to extend naturally into areas of rest and recreation – an approach that echoes mid-century ideals of openness and integration with landscape.
Materiality and detailing are approached with restraint and intention, favouring a timeless palette that emphasises texture, light and proportion. The interiors adopt a calm, almost spa-like sensibility – spaces that are at once refined and deeply comfortable, offering a place of reprieve from the pace of everyday life.
Grounded in its context yet quietly distinct, Pembroke Place presents a considered vision for modern suburban living – one defined not by excess, but by clarity, craftsmanship and an enduring sense of calm.
